It is important to me that my work positively impacts my community.
I have been involved with Britepaths since 2016 in several capacities and love the support that the organization gives to individuals and families in Fairfax county. As the Data Architect at Britepaths, my role is to help program staff members best quantify the work that they do so that we can most effectively demonstrate our impact to funders.
It is imperitive that my work challenge me.
I need to be learning while I work. Give me a problem to solve and time and resources to figure it out and I am at my happiest
I was trained as a 1980s style programmer and managed to stay current until the early 2000s. Then became a lapsed software developer. However, I have jumped back into that world through learning full stack web site development and look forward to applying these skills to do good in the world.
It is fulfilling to me to create.
I love watching something come about from nothing.
Once upon a time, I dabbled in glass bead blowing. That was a facinating hobby to learn. Flamework requires some keen eyesight and a very steady hand! I only burned myself once. Next up was 3D printing. That took a while to get proficient at. It was a great technical and artistic challenge. Unfortunately, the primary medium is plastic, which environmental issues aside, I just don't enjoy.
Finally I landed on crochet. There is a mathematics to crochet that is not obvious at first blush. And the repetion is soothing and satisfying. I prefer to work with recycled or natural yarns and hope to develop a line of steam-punk themed items to sell.
And then there is Robotics. I have been a mentor for the Oakton High School Robitics club since 2016. The work those students put into building these robotics is only outdone by the fun they have doing it.
It is captivating for me to learn.
Have you heard about ChatGPT? It is both fascinating and scary. I have been spending my free time delving into what it can and cannot do. My current goal is to learn how to integrate it within this website. Stay tuned to see what I can get happening right here in this space.
